Nikka From The Barrel is a blended whisky which was released in 1985. The development of this expression started with an aim to deliver full flavors and richness of whisky like "from the barrel", which only blenders can sniff and taste. The secret behind its gorgeous flavor is the unique combination of complex blending, higher ABV 51.4% and "marriage" process.
The complex formula is created by blending more than 100 different batches of malt and grain whiskies. After blending, the whisky is filled into used barrels around at 58.5% ABV and matured for another few months. This "marriage" process harmonizes all components in the formula, resulting in a mellow taste. Bottling is controlled at 51.4% ABV, almost equivalent to 90 British proof, that Nikka blenders determined through repeated experiments to achieve the ideal taste profile.
The iconic square bottle reflects its concept "a small block of whisky" and embodies the intense and rich flavors of the whisky inside. Long after its launch, this bottle is still timeless and recognized for its ultimate simplicity.
Age: NAS
Proof: 102.8
Origin: Probably Japan, but it could contain whiskies from elsewhere.

Wow Oak! Neither of us are big fans of a strong oak flavor. But we did like the way it gently coated the entire inside of your mouth. A nice long finish, and the aftertaste is a little less oaky. And it was smooth. But did I mention the oak?
ReplyDeleteColor: medium amber
ReplyDeleteNose: peaty, Smokey, magic, dried apricot
Taste: chocolate, smoke, spice, a little cherry
Finish: not as long as the smell and taste would suggest. But it has a lightness.
This is really good and really interesting. It makes me want to go back in for another sniff and another sip. Last night is still my favorite, but this is now my second favorite.
Wood and smoke. Strong but smooth. Long warm finish. Screams Scotch. Really good This might be my new favorite.
ReplyDeleteSJX: 3.5 out of 4 (I’ll have another)
My first reaction to the nose was as if it was pure alcohol, but once I got into it the nice smoky aroma dominated. This is probably due to my lack of skill and sophistication with scotch. I don’t particularly like scotch but this one was pretty good. It finished a bit cleaner than some of the ones I haven’t liked. Not my favorite but it got better as it went.
ReplyDeleteColor: light amber/golden
ReplyDeleteSmell: smells like alcohol, some oak
Taste: earthiness, maybe some clove and cherry , A little burn and harshness in the medium finish. It’s fine but I don’t love it.
Amber color. Nose is Smoke, vanilla, chocolate maybe some floral. Notes in there. some Good burn on lips, tongue and back of throat with smallest sip. Oaky and peaty flavor at 5 min. At 15 min all of the astringency has faded and it’s turned into straight pleasure. Still some burn after the swallow but flavors are all sweet and delicious. Vanilla, caramel, chocolate. Finish still has some smoke. May have replaced #3 for my new favorite.
